Barely Domestic Mama

Common cold….you suck!

Dear Mr. Cold Bug,

When you took over 17 days ago, I thought that things weren’t going to be too bad between us. You started out slow. I was sneezing here and there, so you let me think you were allergies. You sneaky bug! I took allergy pills which would explain why I was not relieved completely of all my symptoms. Sometime in the last week in a half you decided to completely take over and knock me flat on my butt. You weren’t just happy with the sneezing, runny nose and itchy throat. You then introduced a hacking cough, stuff nose and sore throat. I required throat lozenges 24/7 and Vicks Vapor Rub at night just to breathe! Thanks to you I could not participate in my mom’s group activities because I didn’t want to get anyone else sick. Thanks to you I have not been able to sleep a full night’s rest for the last week which has been starting to wear down on me. You made me a complete idiot at Target on Sunday when I decided to buy a video game for my Wii. The plan was to use my other Target gift cards and put the remaining balance on my Visa gift card from my sister. You knew the plan-yet thanks to being up at 1am and going shopping at 9am for the video game-I somehow paid $35 for the video game and two boxes of Capri Sun out of my pocket! I was beyond baffled as I stared at my cashier and I handed him my debit card. You see all I could remember to do was to give him my Target gift cards…I forgot the Visa gift card at the bottom of my purse! I despise you. You left me without energy and barely able to connect thoughts together while I was shopping at Walmart for two weeks worth of groceries after my Target “incident”. My hubby has not appreciated this zombie of a wife who has taken to sleeping on the couch because it somehow keeps me from tossing and turning like I do on our bed. My cats on the other hand seem to appreciate the warm body on the couch to curl up next to and steal my warmth. My toddler doesn’t seem to notice that mom has been feeling less like herself, but maybe the constant crying from mom’s lack of sleep and crappy feeling may have given him a slight inclination that there is something a little different. Now I have decided to cut your visit short since you seem to be planning a longer stay than expected. I have started to drink orange juice, take my prenatal vitamins (no, I’m not preggo), and eat yogurt. I’d like to think that one of those is going to help me towards my recovery. I can’t take being sick anymore. You have made me miserable and you have made my friends think I am a shut-in. I want you gone NOW.

Sincerely,
One very tired mom who would like her life back.

How do you try to keep healthy during this time when the common cold bug is around every corner?

  1. hot packs on the chest and breathing in steam every few hours will help immensely. and one of the best remedies is good old chicken soup – the neurologist i blogged about regarding my daughter’s migraine recommended it as one of the best all around remedies for just about everything that ails you!!! she said thats the first thing she prescribes for all her patients!

Ugh. Not fun! My favorite thing to do is go get a cold buster with an immunity boost at Jamba Juice. Probably doesn’t do much, but as long as I think it works, then it’ll work!

I hope your cold bug dies a horrible and painful death!!!

  3. Blech! Hope you feel better soon – we’ve been passing the bug between family members for the last three weeks now! Take lots of vitamin C and eat some chicken soup!

Oh no! I hope you feel better soon! Kick that cold to the curb! Isn’t that what they say on Springer? “to the curb”? lol Is he still on tv?

I hope you feel better soon! I doped up on cold medicine when I could and got as much sleep as possible. Hot tea with honey did help a little too. The couch (and cat) seemed to both love me too after 2 weeks of being attached to them.
